California Governor Brown signed two bills that protect privacy rights for social media users.  In signing the legislation, California became the third state to enact social media privacy laws.  The law prevents university officials and employers from requesting email and social media account passwords from employees and job applicants.  The laws may not protect accounts that are accessed on employer-issued electronic devices.  It is possible that if a student or employee uses social media on an employer-issued device, that student or employee may need to provide their information.  

The two other states which have enacted social media privacy protection policies are Maryland and Illinois.  These laws have not yet gone into effect.  There are about a dozen other states that are considering similar legislation.
